On a walk I spotted a huge stand of Opuntia cactus, which produce prickly pear fruit as well as edible pads known as nopales. I only wanted the fruit on this survival foraging trip, which are not only edible, but nutritious AND delicious.

Lovely Greens is now on PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/lovelygreens

In a time of change, uncertainty, and fear, growing a rapid response victory garden will help. The idea is to pull back our lawns and replace them with a productive garden. A place to pour our energy and frustrations into and in return, find peace of mind. By its very nature, a victory garden is a triumph over adversity with homegrown food waiting along the journey — empowering harvests good for the mind and body. With many of us under lock-down, now is the time to build the vegetable garden you always wanted.

I’ve created this video as a response to a piece that I shared last week. You can read it here: https://lovelygreens.com/grow-a-rapid-response-victory-garden/

This video is an introduction to victory gardens, along with the four main ways you can start a vegetable garden. They include:
1. Traditional garden beds
2. Raised beds
3. Container gardens
4. Hydroponics (not my area but I do introduce it)

This is the first of a series of videos that I’ll be releasing over the coming weeks and months to help beginner gardeners. If you’re more experienced, I’d love for you to watch and add any extra tips as a comment below.

When growing in small spaces, getting high yield crops out of small spaces is key. Interplanting, also known as intercropping (and in some circles companion planting, but that’s a subject for another video), is a fantastic way to squeeze more harvests out of the same space:

1. Consider planting ‘understory’ plants under your tall veggies like tomatoes, corn etc.

2. Also consider planting quick-season crops between long-season crops, so long as their root systems won’t disrupt growth too much.

3. Finally, consider ‘merging seasons’ by starting fall crops as the summer ones are finishing off, or throwing one last batch of spring crops in between your summer starts.
