I never thought this day would come. I woke up in London with a fever, missed a train (or two), but eventually made it 100 miles to Charles Dowding’s EPIC market garden, Homeacres. The sky opened up for about an hour, and Charles shared the deep wisdom behind his garden.

Charles Dowding is the godfather of the modern “no-dig” or “no-till” approach to gardening, where you NEVER till or dig down into your soil and disturb its structure and the soil life. He applies ~2″ of compost, once per year, and…that’s it. From there, he starts transplants for most everything except for a few root crops and pops them into his beds.

The compost is made on-site, as you’ll see in this video, and the market garden produces around 20,000 GBP of produce every single year.

Cacao is a wonder fruit, as you can use it to make cacao nibs, chocolate, cacao butter, etc. I got one in the mail from Miami Fruit and decided to open the raw cacao seed pod up and taste the cacao fruit and cacao bean to see what truly RAW chocolate (even though this technically is a chocolate precursor) tastes like.

My favorite bokashi bran: https://growepic.co/3Rn5umb

Bokashi composting is one of my favorite ways to make extra use of an abundance of food scraps. By building a simple bokashi bin or bokashi bucket, and using inoculated bran as a fermentation agent, you can ‘pre-digest’ food scraps before you put them into your soil.

It’s an absolutely amazing way to compost quicker, and compost MORE. You can compost meats, fats, oils, and cooked food with bokashi, none of which you’d put in your hot compost pile or worm bin.

This year has seen some highs and lows for me in the garden. Experiences that have changed how I’ll garden in the future. In this video I’ll take you through the three biggest lessons and run through the story behind each. Beginning work in the new home garden, appearing on BBC’s Gardeners World, the dreaded aminopyralid herbicide, and losing my beloved cat, Louis. If you’ve not heard the news yet, he passed away on December 10th. I give a little update at the end of this video and some more uplifting ideas too. It’s one of my favourite days of the year today — the winter solstice.

See my winter solstice video from last year: https://youtu.be/UCH_wzTDuVM

Question for you: share your own biggest lessons you’ve learned in the garden this year as a comment below. I’m sure that everyone reading will be able to learn from them as well.

This video is a spotlight for a few plants in the Fargesia genus; which is a cold hardy clumping bamboo. I’ll also detail the conditions necessary for these beautiful plants to thrive, running bamboo and when it may be better to grow subtropical bamboos.

If you live in zone 6, you will be relatively restricted as far as what species of Fargesia you can grow. As you get into zone 7, you will have other genera available including other Fargesia, (like F. robusta) that will thrive in your climate. As you go to zone 8 and further south, then you can start growing subtropical bamboo.

The best place to buy bamboo is Bamboo Garden Nursery, in Oregon USA.

Growing a HUGE pothos plant with bushy, big leaves and a vining habit is pretty simple, provided you take note of these 5 tips. We often forget that Epipremnum aureum is a vining, vigorous grower in its natural habitat. So mimicking that habitat as well as some pruning and propagation techniques will keep your pothos looking bushy and full for years to come.
