It’s like spring came a month early and with temps of about 12-14C (55-57F) all week it seemed a fitting time to deep clean the greenhouse.

Over the winter I’ve been using it to house my container plants — strawberries in pots, scented geraniums, and succulents. Their added moisture has made the moss, algae, and overall gunk issue even worse. And have you had a look at the ribbons of algae living in the places where the glass panes overlap? That needed to go.

Using low-impact and organic products I give the entire greenhouse the full twice over. From top to bottom I scrape away the gunk, and even use a new trick to clean the algae between the glass. Afterwards I apply an organic spray that will control future algae growth for the months ahead. You can get it online if you’re interested in using it for your greenhouse or poly tunnel.

I also make a small commission if you end up making a purchase so thank you!

QUESTIONS for you:

1. Are you cleaning your greenhouse right now too?

2. Do you have any tips you’d like to share on other ways to clean a greenhouse?

Apologies upfront for the audio issues on this one, folks! 30+MPH winds on a roof is tough…but I tried! I visited my friends Lydia and Gina of Eix Verd (Green Path), an ecological design company focused on urban farming.

I checked out their rooftop garden, which they use as a testing site to see what plants and gardening methods perform best for them in their area. They then take those principles and use them in their green roof designs and installations for clients around Barcelona.

February in the allotment garden can be wet, windy, and bitterly cold. Still there are things to do around the plot including looking for storm damage, covering early rhubarb for tender ‘forced’ stems, and even spotting the year’s first frog spawn.

In this video I show you around the allotment on a very windy day. It was also a balmy 10C so actually very pleasant to be outside. February always feels like the cusp of spring but I know all too well that mild temperatures can turn frigid within minutes. I’m starting the gardening year slowly and not sowing anything that could suffer in a cold snap.

QUESTIONS for you:

1. Do you have any ideas for protecting the frog spawn from freezing?

2. What would you do with the apple tree? Move it or train it to a lower height?
