18 Year Old POND Gets a NEW WATERFALL | Cedar Grove, NJ

This family in Cedar Grove, NJ has been enjoying their backyard fish pond for over 18 years! But, just like anything that has been around that long, it’s time for a little facelift action. The old waterfall was leaking and just looking tired, so we completely removed it and created a brand new cascading waterfall using larger boulders and an Aquascape 2500 Biofalls Filter.

Enjoy!

If you’re a subscriber, you’ll know I put a video out already about making a self watering pot. Well, a reader sent me some 5 gallon bucket inserts he made and I have to say…the design is super smart!

These remove the need for a wicking material, because the soil cups built into the plate act both as supports for the water chamber as well as the area water flows into the soil and starts to wick upward via capillary action.

I compare and contrast my design with Fred of 5 Gallon Farm’s design in this video, as well as show you how I’m going to plant this one out with a bunch of basil!

If you want to make a DIY self watering container, I suggest checking out my other video, linked in the top right corner of this one.

Pothos, also known as Epipremnun aureum, HAS to be one of the easiest plants to care for…ever. It’s native to French Polynesia and has become invasive in many tropical countries…but in our homes it’s an epic plant!

I’ve got a few pothos varieties for you in this video:

– ‘Satin’ Pothos (Scindapsus Pictus)
– Green Queen Pothos
– Marble Queen Pothos

There are a few other cool varieties to look out for, too: golden pothos and neon pothos are some of my other favs.

It’s exceptionally easy to care for, needing medium light, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, and fertilization once a year or so. You can let the vines trail or climb, depending on your aesthetic.

Pothos propagation is best done via cuttings in water, as I find the soil method is slower and has a higher failure rate.

Ginger root is an incredible addition to almost all styles of cuisine, and it’s surprisingly easy to grow. There are a few different methods you can use, all of which work well. Some people just cut pieces of ginger, making sure a few eyes are on each piece and plant directly.

In this video, we are going to be growing ginger from the store by starting it off in bowls of water. Once new shoots and roots start developing from the growth nodes, we can either plant them directly in the soil, or snap them off and plant those pieces directly into the soil.

Growing ginger in containers is easy, too – it loves a nutrient-rich, moist soil and plenty of sun. So long as you give it those two things, it’ll grow vigorously and will be ready to harvest about ~4 months from planting.

In a perfect world, you’d plant ginger in the spring for a fall harvest, but depending on your climate you can get away with either a shorter or longer growing season.

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or pitayaha, is an incredible fruit produced by a cactus! Contrary to its name, the dragon fruit care is actually not like most cacti. It prefers nutrient-rich, well draining soil, a lot of space, and a decent (but not overwhelming) amount of sun.

I got some cuttings of the Hylocereus undatus variety, which is the red-skinned and white-fleshed variety. There are two other varieties:

– Hylocereus costaricensis: Red skin and red flesh
– Hylocereus megalanthus: Yellow skin and white flesh

Follow along as I learn how to grow dragon fruit in containers and compete against my friend to see who can grow the most EPIC dragonfruit. Just be patient…part 2 of this series might take a few months to come out!

Gardeners are some of the best people for helping bee populations worldwide. It’s rare that I meet another gardener who keeps bees so I wanted to share some reasons why you should.

There are also 25,000 species of bees throughout the world, so it’s not just about honey bees. In the USA there are 4000 species alone! They include carpenter bees, mason bees, solitary bees, leaf miner bees, and our favorite fuzzy one, the bumblebee (of which there are dozens of species).

Creating habitat, shelter, and growing pollinator-friendly plants and flowers is one of the best ways to help. Some of these bees you might never see and some you might not recognize as a bee. All are important for our gardens and the environment as a whole.

One thing that gardeners can do better than others is to grow pollinating plants that flower throughout the year. Flowers for spring, late spring, summer, autumn, and even winter. Here’s a list of 50+ plants and flowers that you can grow for a bee-friendly garden: https://lovelygreens.com/planting-honey-bee-friendly-garden/

Question for you: Can you think of any more ways that gardeners can help bees? Leave your idea as a comment below.
