It’s a cold and blustery Sunday and a day for indoor gardening. First of all, a bit of measuring outside. To make sure that I’m putting the new garden arch in the right place, I’m creating a to-scale garden plan.

Measuring the exact dimensions of the garden and the placement of fixed structures will help me plan out where the new beds and paths will be. Once I know that, then I can decide where to place the garden arch.

Also in preparation for it, I have a look at different roses and find a beautiful type that will grow well on my arch, have a long blooming time, and will produce really nice hips in the autumn.

Lastly, I order a collection of autumn planted onions, shallots, and garlic. Those will go out in the allotment garden next month.

In this video:

Questions for you:

— Did you catch my second video of last week? Watch RED Apple Pie and see the full recipe:

— Have you ordered any autumn planted onions, shallots, or garlic yet? What varieties did you choose and why?

My Red Love apple tree has been growing in the allotment for the past four years. This year was its first decent sized harvest of red fleshed apples. Deliciously sweet, they’re lovely as an eating apple but I had another idea for them.

This is my recipe for RED Apple Pie. The beautiful crimson color of the filling is completely natural and comes from non-GMO apples. These guys were bred to be this way.

Let me know what you think of the pie! And if you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!)

I’ll be putting the full recipe and instructions up on lovelygreens.com shortly. In the meantime, the filling has:

HOW TO PROPAGATE WATER LILY FROM LEAVES WITH UPDATES
FULL INFORMATION -FAST N EASY METHOD
DAIZZ”S TIP:-Some varieties produce plantlets, which are tiny plants that grow from the leaves. These plantlets put out their own roots and begin growing when the leaf has died. Plant propagation from leaves and flowers of a plant is called viviparous reproduction, and you can do it in your own pond as long as you have an appropriate variety. Varieties capable of viviparous reproduction include tina, colarado, N. lotus, N. micrantha, N. “August Koch,” N. “Bagdad,” N. “Bluebird,” N. “Charles Thomas” and many others

I found a time between stormy days to continue work on the new back garden. First off, trying to clean the caked on shade paint from the greenhouse glass. White spirits seems to take some of it off but not the more thickly applied paint. So it’s back to the drawing board to consider more options.

Storm Ali has been whipping up a storm on the Island this week and has managed to knock quite a few of my apples to the ground. I’m collecting them in my basket today and am planning on using them for some upcoming DIY videos. Apple pie for starters!

I also have a look at the area behind the greenhouse to see if it would be a good place for a composting area. Please chime in on what you think could be a good solution.

Lastly, I take down the old rotten ‘arch’ above the garden gate. I have a new one ready to go in very soon. I’m also going to paint all the outdoor fence woodwork before winter. Not only to spruce it up but to protect the wood from the elements. I begin by testing the paint I chose on the back of the garden gate.

In this video:
✽ PARTIALLY cleaning the paint off the greenhouse glass
✽ Picking windfall apples
✽ Considering composting ideas for the back corner of the garden
✽ Taking down the old garden ‘arch’
✽ Testing paint on the back of the garden gate

Questions for you:

— I’m planning on releasing a shorter, DIY focused video every week in addition to my normal Sunday video. Is this something that you’d like to watch?
— What do you think I should do about converting that paved over back corner into a compost station?
— Any more ideas on ways to clean the greenhouse glass?

As fall slowly makes its way to San Diego (Zone 10b), I find myself in a gardening lull, making some improvements to the front yard rather than actively cultivating the plot right now. The end of summer always leaves me a little drained in the garden, and I like to take some time, reset, and prepare for round two of San Diego gardening.

That means replacing the brick pathway in my garden, which had become a tripping hazard! I chose a simple paver-style layout that makes it easier, safer, and hopefully a LITTLE more beautiful in the front yard, though I’m no landscaping expert.

At the end of the video, I go into some of my thoughts about career paths and talk a little about how Epic Gardening started. I find it so valuable to go your OWN WAY in this world and consider paths that you might otherwise have not thought of as viable options.

Today’s video is sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals, who have an incredible careers page for the vast array of opportunities in the field of working with and around plants.
