Calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis) are an easy to grow herbal treatment for skin complaints ranging from eczema to minor cuts and sores. It’s safe and effective and there are many studies showing how calendula extract helps speed up the healing of minor skin injuries. There is also some research into its use in anti-aging. All the more reason to use calendula flowers as a natural medicine and skincare herb.

In this video, I share how I grow calendula flowers, how I harvest them, and how I use the petals to make calendula oil. Oil infused with calendula can be used as a skincare ingredient, as a safe herbal remedy, and even mixed into salad dressings and consumed. That’s how safe calendula is – you can eat it. It adds a natural golden color to baked goods, salads, and other dishes.

Ljubezen do sonaravnega vrtnarjenja želita približati mladim in vsem vrtnarjem poenostaviti vrtnarjenje.

In my last video on vermicomposting, I went through a simple setup of a single-tote worm bin from Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm. Pretty soon, that bin was full and it was time to redesign the system to be more scalable and easier to work with.

A 3-tote stackable system has a few advantages:

– Bottom tote can be used for drainage of worm juice
– Middle and top bins can be swapped out infinitely
– Worms will self-separate from castings, making harvesting castings easy
– Can hold way more food scraps and worms

Overall, a stackable system is simply better than a single-tote system. This video goes through exactly how to build one, with a few modifications that I made note of in the video. There are probably more ways to improve upon this design as well, so let me know in the comments. So far, it’s working wonderfully though!

Making a DIY worm bin adds a ton of extra fertility to your garden and is a great way to make use of food scraps 🙂

TREE ROOTS KILLED THIS POND (and my drone died too!)

Today, we’re in Lincoln Park, NJ to completely rip out and rebuild a backyard fish pond that has been destroyed by tree roots growing through the liner. The koi pond, stream and waterfall were all leaking pretty badly due to the damage caused by the roots, so we are removing all of the rocks, bridge over the pond, liner, plumbing, skimmer and existing constructed wetland filter to make way for a brand new pond installation!

Self watering planters, also known as sub-irrigated systems, make watering easy by using wicking action to water your soil from below. They keep soil evenly moist, especially when combined with some mulch on the soil surface and are perfect for finicky plants that love consistent watering.

This design is not only cheap, but it’s easy to make in about 20 minutes. You can clone it and build an entire network of self watering pots. I included a few modifications that might help you manage your bucket better, too!
