I’ve painted up a full National hive to be a pretty Periwinkle Blue! They say that blue is one of the Honeybees’ favourite colours so I hope my bees enjoy moving into their new digs this weekend.

The bees this hive is destined for are currently in a place that I’m concerned is getting too much attention. In fact I think vandals have been past and have thrown drinks cans at it. I’ve decided to bring these bees back to a quieter place in Laxey for both their own safety and for the safety of people. My next beekeeping video will show how I move them.

With the uncharacteristically warm winter, and a warming trend on its way, despite the recent snow it may be time to plant cold hardy crops here in Zone 3. On the last segment of the Urban Garden Series I started the process of planting my summer loving crops like tomatoes and peppers indoors. Today I am going to talk about how I plan to grow my cold hardy crops under cover and some of the experiments I am going to do that should help me extend my season and increase my harvests by adapting these methods to my garden.

Two weeks ago I set up an experiment in the testing garden assumptions series to evaluate if both Actively Aerated Compost Tea and Compost Extractions lived up to their main claims. Primarily I looked at if they had potential as a fertilizer and then if the methods allowed you to increase the concentration of bacteria within it.
The two claims I took a look at are not the only ones made by advocates of compost tea. Today I will investigate the other claims made about compost teas before making a decision at the end of this video if I am going to continue or abandon the practice in my garden.

Clips and interviews of our annual seed and plant swap. Each year I and other allotment garden members help to organize this free event where gardeners both from the allotments and across the Island come together to share extra seeds and plants with each other.

The event is free and open to the public and one of the Isle of Man’s gardening highlights of the year. It helps hobby gardeners to save money on new seeds, pick up varieties they might never have tried before, and creates a festive atmosphere where some people meet each other year after year. I’m really proud to have started this event in my community.

This is a short video but for a longer one where I tell how to organize your own seed swap watch this video: https://youtu.be/Fx3TZVi0aH8

12 Tips on how to organize a successful Seed Swap event. Blog post here: http://lovelygreens.com/2016/03/how-to-organize-a-seed-swap-event.html

A Seed Swap is an event where gardeners can share their seeds and plants with other growers. It’s a chance to save money, reduce seed wastage, and create a social environment where green thumbs can chat about growing.

For the past five years I’ve helped organise the Seed and Plant Share + Gardeners’ Social on the Isle of Man. It’s grown over the years to become one of our local gardening highlights of the year.

This year I’ve taken videos of the event and would like to give you tips on how to create your own successful seed and plant sharing event.
